I work on the second level of a medical building with floor to ceiling windows along one side of the wide walkway/patient waiting area. This gives employees and patients a spectacular view of the valley and the mountains – as well as the employee parking lot. Typically, we tend to ignore the parking lot and just enjoy the panoramic view of nature.
However, the other day after I clocked out and made my way down the walkway towards the stairs that would take me down to my car, I looked out the window at the other employees already in the parking lot. I noticed a coworker friend of mine walking away from the building, hand in hand with a man who was certainly not her husband. This guy had hair reminiscent of Johnny Bravo – and unless her husband had just had a drastic haircut and color, it was not him! I squinted a bit to try to see him more clearly and, as I watched, my friend leaned her head to his shoulder and nuzzled him affectionately with her short brunette locks.
I was wide-eyed and stunned and, as if she could feel my piercing, somewhat judgmental gaze, my friend looked back towards the building and up at me. She then turned back and said something to her man friend, and then he turned and looked up at me. By this time, they were halfway across the rather large parking lot and I had made it to the stairwell. As I started down, I was possessed with curiosity and, I admit, righteous indignation. I jogged down the stairs and burst out of the door, determined to get close enough to get a clear look at this guy – this player – who had stolen my friend’s cheating heart.
Let me tell you, trying to combine a race walk pace with a casual “I just happen to be a fast walker and I’m really not interested in you at all” attitude is more difficult that you might imagine. Apparently, I wasn’t pulling it off very well, as the couple looked over their shoulders at me more than once. When they were nearly at the end of the parking lot, my friend’s new lover hopped into a car, quickly started it up, and roared away. As my car was nearby, I hopped in and started it up, thinking I could at least catch my friend before she departed and ask her what the hell she was thinking!
I drove quickly to the end of the parking lot, where my friend was just unlocking a car that was unfamiliar to me. I slowed down as she opened the door and leaned inside. I came to a stop behind her car, rolling down my window so I could give her the third degree about her affair. Her head popped up and she looked at me with large, alarmed eyes.
It wasn’t my friend.
I had never seen this woman before in my life. Sure, she had the same hairstyle and body-type as my friend – but that is where the resemblance ended.
I floored it before she could call security to report my stalking.
I think I may need new glasses.
